Ask anyone who runs a street photography workshop and they will tell you that the most frequently asked question is: “How do I conquer my fear of shooting strangers on the street?” It’s an emotion that most of us go through – or have been through – and feelings can range from mild apprehension to uncontrollable terror.
In terms of our physiological make-up, fear is a defence mechanism, a warning system which aims to keep us out of danger. In fact, a small element of fear is no bad thing! It keeps us sharp and can provide a quick dose of adrenalin which will motivate us to get the picture. On the other hand, fear can be debilitating; it can prevent us from getting the picture – or any picture at all – and make us retreat into the nearest café for refuge.
