Police holidays cancelled . . . teenagers being encouraged to bunk off school . . . anti-capitalist protesters everywhere . . . May Day in London usually brings social issues and chaos onto the streets in the form of protests, demonstrations and often public disorder. Our May Day street photography workshop puts us in the thick of the action, whether it be in Whitehall, Mayfair, Trafalgar Square, Oxford Street or the City.

Because of the changing and unpredictable nature of the day, and our need to follow the action as it unfolds, the itinerary needs to be fairly fluid. We will meet at 9am for a through briefing over coffee; the next hour or so will be spent developing our photojournalists’ brief and the terms of reference for the assignment. As well as running through the technical issues and challenges of the day, you will be briefed thoroughly on safety, etiquette, policing and the law.

Depending on the course of events, we will take lunch ‘on the hoof’ and stop for a rest and our first debrief at some point during the afternoon. It is possible that we will be shooting well into the evening.

We will finish the day with a final debrief, discussing our experiences and with a critique of some of the images taken during the day. And no doubt, a well-earned drink!

What you will learn:

• How to work to a journalistic brief.

• Working under pressure in a challenging environment.

• What makes a political picture ‘sell’.

• The safety and legal aspects of covering a ‘public order’ event.

• How to create a cohesive set of pictures which tell a story.

• How to ‘see’ a winning shot. How to work quickly under pressure.

• Technical considerations and best practice: exposure, focus, formats, etc.

• Dealing with third parties – the public, the police and the authorities.

• A workflow for the quick filing / wiring of images.

• Finding a market for your pictures.

• Career possibilities in this competitive market.
