NIkon ZF - a street photographer’s camera?
I recently bought a Nikon Zf - and the only question I'm really interested in is - is it any good for street or documentary photography?
There are lots of reviews out there on the Zf and I won’t repeat what’s already been said - but they do all seem to be very positive. But let’s face it, a camera is just a box that lets in light and records what it sees - so there’s no point in getting all dreamy-eyed about all the facts and figures so we’ll focus here on how well it does the job. And in my limited time with my Zf, I have to say it does the job extremely well.
My camera comes with this 40mm f/2 lens - the body and lens came together as a kit - and together they feel like my Nikon cameras of old. To me, how a camera feels is just as important as how it performs. If a camera is a joy to use, then it’s probably going to be used well.
I love the chunky, heavy, metallic feel and the analogue sensation one gets from shooting with this. I’m sure there’s lots of clever stuff somewhere in the menus but if I can quickly get to aperture, shutter speed and ISO, then I’m reasonably happy. My only quibble is that there’s no aperture ring on this lens and it has to be set with a dial on the body - which is a bit fiddly and not very intuitive, for me at least, so I'm not wildly happy about that.
However, this ‘kit’ lens is a bit of a cracker with sharp and punchy rendering and pleasing bokeh if you like that sort of thing. It will be interesting to see how my old AIS lenses work with an adapter.
What more can I say? It’s a camera which feels very good, I think it looks quite good and it takes pretty good pictures. Is it a good camera for street photography? Very much so.
