New to street photography? We can help!

We’re with you on the journey.

Street photography can be a little daunting to the uninitiated. Where do I start? Where do I go? What do I shoot? What’s the legal position? What gear do I need? So many questions and so much to think about.

What is street photography? A great starting point is working out what street photography is and what it actually means to you. Brian’s short YouTube video about the three main approaches to street photography may help you get to grips with some of the basics. In fact his YouTube street photography channel has plenty more informative videos, many of which are geared to those just starting out on their journey.

Spend lots of time thinking about what type of street photography you enjoy looking at and what sort of images you aspire to taking. With this vision in your mind, you’re journey will be starting to take shape.

Read lots of street photography books! This is the best way to really get into the genre. Study the greats, find work to aspire to, be inspired by what others have done.

What gear do you need? The next thing to think about is gear. Can you get along with what you already have or do you need to buy more gear? Gear maybe isn’t as important as you think and there’s a good chance you can at least make a start with your existing kit. In the meantime please head over to this section about the best gear for street photography.
