FAQs

  • How much experience do I need?

For our street photography courses you should have a working knowledge of your camera and an understanding of aperture, shutter speed and ISO. You may be new to the genre of street photograohy or you may be an experienced street photographer who wants to study new approaches and techniques.

  • What gear do I need?

Relatively little - less is more! We are not gear-obsessed and are more interested in getting the picture. Anything from a good basic digital compact camera to a professional DSLR will be fine, as will a traditional film camera – and even a smartphone. We aim to work quickly and unobtrusively, and recommend that gear is kept to an absolute minimum.

  • What else shall I bring on the day?

We recommend you travel light. Just bring your camera kit (as little of it as possible), spare batteries, spare memory cards, clothing appropriate for the weather conditions, comfortable shoes, bottle of water. Any camera is fine; if you have a prime lens of around 28-35mm (full frame equivalent), that’s ideal – but a zoom is fine too.

  • Is there lots of walking involved?

Quite a bit, yes! Because of the very nature of what we do, ‘pounding the pavements’ is very necessary and unfortunately the course is not suitable for those who are unable to walk far. On a full-day workshop, we usually walk around 6-7km.

  • Are there any additional costs?

Other than your own coffees, lunch and refreshments during and after the workshop, no. Very occasionally we will need to use public transport, so you may need to pay for a ‘short hop’ fare on a tube, bus, train or tram (but in reality this is quite rare).

  • What happens if the weather is bad?

The show goes on. Rain, snow, ice, fog and other forms of inclement weather can all provide an environment for great street photography. Make sure you keep an eye on the weather forecast and bring appropriate clothing or weather protection.

  • Where do we meet?

You’ll be sent comprehensive joining instructions 3-4 days before your street photography workshop which will contain details of our meeting venue. This varies according to the workshop location and predicted weather conditions and is always convenient for public transport links.

  • Can you run a course close to me?

Very possibly. Let us know what you have in mind and we may be able to develop a documentary or street photography workshop close you where you’re based. Please bear in mind that our course locations must be suitable for our needs and will be thoroughly researched before a properly structured course can take place.

  • Can you arrange 1-2-1 tuition?

Yes, we will put together a coaching and mentoring programme to help you achieve your artistic or career objectives. From a 1-day workshop to a 12 month mentoring programme, we can help. See here for details.
