Bologna - Zine by Brian Lloyd Duckett

£10.00

Bologna, the capital and largest city of the Emilia-Romagna region in Northern Italy, is known by its three nicknames: la Rossa (‘the red’), la Grassa (‘the fat’) and la Dotta (‘the learned’).

The photographer will encounter many references to all three. The cityscape is dominated by red buildings and porticoes – 45km of them. Although la Rossa originally referred to the colour of these buildings it later became connected with the communist ideology supported by the majority of the population.

La Grassa refers to Bologna’s rich association with food, particularly pork, egg pasta and cheese – especially Parmigiano (Parmesan). The quaint Quadrilatero area of the city contains many market stalls, restaurants, cafes and bars which are alive from early morning until well into the night. Bologna is a foodie’s paradise.

What about la Dotta? The University of Bologna, founded in 1088, is thought to be the oldest in the world and its presence dominates much of eastern side of the city. The university is more than a collection of buildings: it brings youth, energy and a vibrant culture to the city.

Did I mention that I adore Bologna? Every corner is steeped in history yet it combines the old with the new as stylishly as anywhere in the world.

This is a personal collection of images which aims to convey the essence of Bologna, a mixture of travel and street photography shot during a hot week in July, 2024.

The zine contains 44 pages containing 29 images:

  • A5 (148mm x 210mm), full colour throughout

  • Uncoated stock, 300gsm cover, 120gsm pages, staple bound

The cost is £9. You can now buy a signed copy of a limited First Edition run of 100 copies.
