This is more ‘photography’ than my usual ‘street photography’. In this workshop you’ll have influences of documentary, seascape, landscape and of course a little street street photography. But we won’t be tied to any specific genres - this is all about documenting ‘normal life’ in the Venetian lagoon and on some of the less inhabited islands (and we will spend some time in the city of Venice itself).
Our aim is not to create the ‘pretty postcard’ scenes which many workshops offer - this is more about documenting real life and aiming to tell the story of this amazing location.
This new workshop gets us out into the lagoon and to some of the islands, which could include Pellestrina, Torcello, Mazzorbo, St Erasmo, Burano, St Pietro and Giudecca (the precise itinerary will be dependent on the weather).
March usually brings a mixture of sunshine, mist and fog so we can expect some moody and dramatic backdrops.
We will travel to the islands via the public waterbus from the city, where we’ll all be staying. As people have widely differing tastes and budgets, you’ll need to organise your own accommodation - and of course Brian will be on hand to advise if necessary.
Venice and the Venetian lagoon offer the perfect backdrop for photographic storytelling. This workshop focuses on life in the lagoon: the clam fishermen, the abandoned buildings, the village communities and lots of ‘real life’. You’ll be encouraged to create a project-based photo-essay (with full support from Brian) and there will be a little light ‘homework’ to do prior to the workshop.
You should aim to finish the workshop with a compelling body of work and then go on to produce your own book or zine.
We start the workshop on the evening before day 1 with an informal ‘get to know each other’ supper in a traditional Venetian restaurant; we usually eat together on most of the remaining evenings - both of these are optional but it’s a great way to keep the workshop spirit going.
The workshop cost does not include accommodation, your waterbus ticket (€65 for 7 days) and food & drinks.
