the 2024 general election
I love photographing the major political events such as the General Election. At such an event, we have a window of two days, during which we should be able to gather enough material together for a project: the day of the election itself and ‘results day’. Each day has a different character and feel and this year I was able to shoot only on results day, July 5th.
The day was unusually quiet - very quiet in fact. I was running a themed workshop, based on the election results, so I didn’t focus on my own shooting, other than to tell the story of the day. I’m a bit of a veteran at shooting elections and previous events have been far busier - think protestors, lunatics and even a bit of rioting. But we made the most of what we had to work with.
There’s a great space where street photography meets documentary photography - and that’s the space I’ll try to occupy when shooting an event such as this; I’ll aim for some light story-telling, maybe with a little wit or irony. Below are a few of the images I shot on the day . . .
