NEW! 1-day documentary workshop in Brighton or Blackpool

Get your documentary photography off to a good start on this ‘Introduction to Documentary’ workshop - the perfect introduction to documentary photography.

The workshop: 6 steps for success

  • 1. Start with an idea

It all begins with an idea. Using Brian’s knowledge and experience combined with group brainstorming sessions, we’ll help you take the germ of an idea and work it up into a fully formed plan. Don’t worry if your initial idea is vague - that’s what we’re here for.

  • 2. Ongoing development of your concept

You’ll probably find that, during the lifecycle of the documentary project, your concept will be constantly refined and updated. We’re with you throughout the process to keep the idea sharp and on track.

  • 3. Find your visual voice

A big part of the documentary process is finding your visual voice, creating a suitable perspective and getting the message right. The workshop will help you find the right angle which gives the project a distinctive personality.

  • 4. Research, planning & logistics

All projects need meticulous research, structured planning and a touch of the ‘spreadsheet mentality’ when it comes to logistics. But it’s not rocket science - getting wrong is easy; getting it right is even easier!

  • 5. Shooting the project

In some ways the shooting of the project is the easy part! However, help and support is here to help you get the technicalities spot-on, from camera settings to lens choices to finding the right aesthetic for your body of work.

  • 6. Getting it out there

Most documentary projects come to life as a book, a zine, an exhibition or just a simple set of prints. During the workshop we’ll look carefully at all the options and guide you towards the right one for you.
