A bleak monochromatic landscape

Last Sunday’s workshop in Shoreditch took place on a bleak, grey and misty Sunday morning. As there were not many people around - and not much activity on the streets - we turned our attention to shooting some urban landscapes. In an environment such as this, black & white seemed like the best option and that medium felt perfectly suited to the conditions.

I’m always drawn to images which appear ‘timeless’ and the monochrome treatment can often reinforce this feeling. In this case the mist, the frost and the lack of people helped convey the atmosphere and the mood of bleakness and desolation. So, when the conditions are like this, put some warm gear on and get out there - you’ll often find opportunities to shoot images like these (all shot on a 28mm lens by the way) . . .

I run street and urban landscape photography workshops throughout the year.
