Prague is a changing city and the reality of the 21st century doesn’t necessarily live up to the established romantic perceptions of earlier times. Along with many other major European cities (Paris, Rome or London, for example), the Czech capital sees a little of its cultural identity seep away every year to become a homogenised version of itself.
Yet photographers keep returning to Prague - and for good reason. The light catches centuries-old stone in ways which seem almost theatrical. Narrow streets open unexpectedly into grand squares. Trams glide through the city with quiet purpose while history lingers in every corner.
Prague evokes feelings of nostalgia, of beauty, architectural wonder, mystery, romanticism and culture. So far, so good. But cities are living things - and Prague is changing.
The Prague in these images is not the untouched fairy-tale city found in guidebooks. It is a place re-negotiating its place in history - a city balancing its rich cultural identity against the relentless pressures of mass tourism. Souvenir shops replace family businesses; short-term rentals reshape neighbourhoods; streets that once belonged to residents increasingly belong to visitors, stag and hen parties, tour groups of 20, 30 40 or more, all following the same familiar routes.
This is the reality.
