Leisurely Venice 31 Jan to 2 Feb 2025 (1 PLACE AVAILABLE)
This Venice street photography workshop is for those who would appreciate a more easy-going, unhurried and gentler pace with lots of breaks and just the right amount of 'me time'. It's a slower, more relaxed experience, with less walking involved and more use of the vaporetto (waterbus) to get around the islands.
You’ll have the relaxed time and space to enjoy the beauty of Venice whilst learning or developing your street photography skills and producing a compelling body of work. The 'Leisurely Venice' concept is based on my usual street / travel / documentary workshop, set in my beloved Venice, but with a different tempo.
DATES
The workshop will run for 3 days fro 31 January to 2 February 2025. Your hotel will be booked for 4 nights from 30 January, checking out on 3 February.
THE WORKSHOP ELEMENT
This magical 1200 year old city is all about atmosphere - a word which will feature strongly in your images from this workshop. The winter months bring a very special kind of atmosphere: dark, misty and mysterious- and sometimes a little sinister!
Together we’ll explore the real, hidden Venice away from the tourists and into the area where the locals live, work and play. Your workshop will combine street shooting with elements of documentary and travel photography, with expert guidance all the way.
Workshop content:
We will work on techniques for exposure, focusing and composition; learn how to spot an opportunity for a unique picture; discover how work with great light and become a master of it; build your confidence as a street photographer. Most of all, you will discover new ways of telling the story of your travels through stylish and distinctive images.
The workshop will have a strong project focus and you will be encouraged and supported in developing your own idea for a project (or two!) to be shot during the workshop.
Black & white or colour? It’s entirely up to you and you’ll probably want to shoot both. However, there will be plenty of tuition specific to monochrome shooting - which perfectly fits the whole ‘Venice narrative’.
We will be doing lots of structured shooting and you will receive coaching, mentoring and constant feedback from your course leader, Brian Lloyd Duckett.
Your workshop will be immersive, inspiring and great fun. The experience will challenge you, stretch you and will elevate your photography.
Logistics:
This workshop will run for three full days along the following lines:
The days will usually start at 9.30am and finish at around 5pm
There will be an optional sunrise shoot on one of the days (according to the weather); those who prefer a lie-in can miss this and catch up with the group after breakfast
We will stop for a break (coffee or a spritz) mid-morning on each day; those who prefer to shoot diluting this time can do so
Each day will have a mid-afternoon break from 1pm to 3pm; you can use this either for a siesta or to shoot on your own, practicing techniques or working on mini-assignments set by Brian, who will be at hand during these periods for one-to-one mentoring and support
Walking between locations will be kept to a minimum and we will use the waterbus at every opportunity (3-day waterbus tickets valued at €65 will be arranged for you and are included in the workshop cost)
For those who want to join us, I'll organise a dinner for the group each evening in a traditional Venetian restaurant (conveniently located, not a late night and not expensive!)
THINGS TO BEAR IN MIND
The walking pace will be slow and relaxed. But however much we try to minimise the walking element, please remember that the waterbus runs only around the outside of the islands and some walking is inevitable. Also bear in mind that there are many bridges in Venice and that we can't avoid them completely!
There will be lots of stopping places, where we’ll take a 10-15 minute break to discuss a specific technique
If anyone needs a break it’s no problem - we’ll pause whenever we need to
ACCOMMODATION: HOTEL ALA
It is essential that we all stay in the same accommodation for this workshop and I have negotiated a good rate for us all at the Hotel Ala which is a lovely traditional hotel (formerly a palazzo) situated in a quaint piazza and chosen specifically because of its great location and excellent customer ratings. Owned by the same Venetian family for over 70 years, the Ala is perfectly located, just a few minutes from San Marco and the Academia Bridge and 100 yards from a waterbus stop (Giglio). We’ve stayed here lots of times and have always had a great experience.
The cost is €120 per night for a double room (for single occupancy) and includes a lovely breakfast. I’ve been staying in Venice for a long time and can assure you this is a very good rate. The only extra is City Tax at €3.50 per person per night. If you would like to bring a partner to share your room the additional cost is €20 per night.
Additional post-workshop nights, should you wish to stay for longer, will be charged at €120 and payable by you directly to the hotel. The hotel website is at https://bit.ly/2YyMCvi
COSTS
The cost of the 3-day workshop, including a 3-day waterbus pass, is £965. The hotel accommodation is £425 for 4 nights, making a total of £1,3950.
You’ll need to pay your own City Tax of €3.50 per night, payable at the hotel when checking out.
If you would like to extend your stay at the hotel please let me know and I will put you in touch with them directly. Sometimes it’s good to add an extra day or two to your stay to revisit locations and shoot on your own.
BOOKING
Places are strictly limited to 6 participants, allocated on a first come, first served basis. Please click the link below to book and pay for your workshop place; we will then invoice you separately for the accommodation, which is payable immediately. Please note that your place is not confirmed until both payments have been made.
Please note:
The rate negotiated with the hotel is valid until 25th September, by which time all bookings need to be finalised.
Please don't book your flights until the workshop is confirmed to be 'live' (ie. once a minimum number of places has been confirmed). In the unlikely event of minimum numbers not being reached, your payments will be refunded in full.
if you need to cancel, the hotel payment can only be refunded if someone takes your place. The workshop booking is subject to the usual StreetSnappers Terms & Conditions. You are strongly urged to have travel insurance in place at the time of booking so that you are fully covered should you need to withdraw after the cancellation period.
