STREET PHOTOGRAPHY IN Marrakesh, January 2025

In the quest for some winter sunshine we headed for Morocco in north western Africa. Most of the time was spent by the pool reading endless books and magazines (just what was needed, in fact) but we did spend four hours in the city of Marrakesh (or Marrakech).

What a city! - especially for street photographers. As it was made very clear to me that this was a ‘holiday’ and not a ‘photography trip’, I took only my Ricoh GRIII and did as much as I could in the very limited time we had there.

Street photography in Marrakesh is great fun but not always easy. The streets of the old town (including the souks) are very narrow and often quite dark. As well as this being a challenge to your ISO it’s also a challenge to your powers of discretion; the locals are not keen on being photographed and all eyes are on you - constantly. Fortunately, the Ricoh GRIII is so small that it’s perfect for this kind of street photography.

I’m now thinking about another trip - on my own and for at least 3-4 days so that I can really get under the skin of the city. Would I run a street photography workshop in Marrakesh? There’s nothing planned but never say never!

Here are a few images from the trip, firstly in colour and then a handful in black & white.
