Last Sunday’s workshop in Shoreditch took place on a bleak, grey and misty Sunday morning. As there were not many people around - and not much activity on the streets - we turned our attention to shooting some urban landscapes.

I’ve known John for a few years and he’s one of those street photographers you’re likely to bump into when you’re out shooting. What I like about John is his commitment to the cause and his passion for street photography. So I offered him this month’s ‘Guest Blogger’ spot. Here’s his article . . .

Chris Killip’s full-career retrospective is currently on view at London’s Photographers’ Gallery (close to Oxford Circus) and you can see it until 19th February. If you can’t make this but live in the North East you’re in luck - the exhibition tours to the Baltic Centre of Contemporary Art in 2023.

What if you enjoy street photography but you live in a small town, maybe a quiet town, where not much happens? Not all of us have ready access to busy streets full of interesting subjects to shoot. Or sometimes the streets are just very quiet and there’s nothing much happening. And what about those of us who don't live in - or near - a big bustling city with lots of activity?

Chimping means looking at your LCD screen to view the image you’ve just taken - and it’s considered to be a bad habit for street photographers. This article gives you 5 good reasons to eliminate chimping from your street photography.

At the end of 2021 I invited my workshop students from that year to submit their top five images from the year and, from those, I picked my favourites. The video below is a slide show of images from this lovely group.

Well, that’s it for another year at the Photography Show at the Birmingham NEC. The big news for show fans is that there will be no event next year and the show will return in March 2024.
